Largehearted Boy's Eighth Birthday

Last Friday was the eighth anniversary of Largehearted Boy, and the last eight years have given me much to be thankful for.

Blogging has transformed my life. I have never been more happier (or fulfilled) both personally and professionally since I left my cubicle behind and struck out on my own with Largehearted Boy and a handful of freelance projects.

Thank you to the readers who visit the site daily, your comments and e-mails always brighten my day. Thanks for spreading the word about the blog.

Special thanks go to Largehearted Boy's contributors. The authors and musicians who contribute to the Book Notes, Note Books, Soundtracked, interviews, and other series continue to amaze me with their insights and essays.

Jami Attenberg has been a special inspiration in the past year. Her Antiheroines series of cartoonist interviews is always surprising and fun, and her curating the Largehearted Lit reading series was both flattering and a perfect fit. I couldn't ask for a better Largehearted Boy contributor, Jami's unending support of the arts combined with her amazing writing talent makes her truly an inspiration.

Thanks to the publicists, musicians, record labels, publishers, and writers who send music and books my way. Discovering that wonderful album or book that I never knew existed always brings a smile to my face.

Fredrik - Trilogi (Kora Records, 2010)

Largehearted Word Books of the Week - February 3rd, 2010

In the Largehearted Word series, the staff of Brooklyn's WORD bookstore highlights several new books released this week.

WORD is an independent neighborhood bookstore in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn, that will celebrate its third anniversary this March. Our primary goal is to be whatever our community needs us to be, which currently means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). We're a small operation, just 1000 square feet and four people, but we read too much, so it all works out. If a weekly dose of WORD here isn't enough for you, follow us on Twitter: @wordbrooklyn.

Shadow Tag
by Louise Erdrich

This is nothing like Erdrich's other novels---it comes from an even deeper, more personal, and more painful place---but it is the best work of hers I've read.

Mauro Palmas ::: Cainà

He is a very famous artist in Sardinia and has long been the musical companion of vocalist Elena Ledda, with whom he founded the legendary group Suonofficina in 1983. Mauro Palmas has worked with personalities such as Maria Carta, Riccardo Tesi, Paolo Fresu, Don Moye and Lester Bowie; he has released an album with popular Italian political songs and composed music for several movies, including »Sonos 'e memoria« by Gianfranco Cabiddu (together with Paolo Fresu).
There is a thread running through his musical career: his openness to all types of music of many different backgrounds and his love of forming his own style from all these elements.

Shorties (American Psycho, The Musical; New Pornographers; and more)

Variety reports that the stage musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's novel American Psycho is taking shape.

Carl Newman talks to Paste about the forthcoming New Pornographers album.

In another song, the band tried to combine Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” with ABBA’s “Waterloo” and Siouxsie and the Banshees’ “Christine.” If that sounds confusing, you’re not the only one having trouble envisioning the new album’s sound. “[Fellow songwriter] Dan Bejar wrote me something where he said he thought [Together] sounded like [2000’s] Mass Romantic crossed with Challengers, and I’m like, I guess that might be true as well.” Newman says before pausing. “Although, any combination of our albums may be true. I think it’s Electric Version crossed with Twin Cinema, myself.” Then he pauses again. “I don’t think that, actually.”
